The Spanish Invasion

In 1928 two Spaniards caused a sensation with the premiere of their film ‘In Chien Anderlo’ previewed at the Studio des Ursulines.

Mathieu was there with a friend from university, Jean-Paul was an academic & generally avoided the avant-garde art scene, but he was interested in meeting Andre Breton – the real reason for Mathieu”s attendance. After the publication of Breton’s “Nadja’ he’d become the celebrity that everyone wanted to know, Mathieu included. He hoped to attain an invitation to lunch in Bretons apartment but the film had thrown him completely – luckily Jean-Paul wasn’t so affected and managed to talk to Breton in a bar after the preview.
