Opened by Emperor Napoleon III on 11 December 1852 the Cirque d’Hiver (“Winter Circus”) was frequented and captured by many artists including Toulouse-Lautrec & Seurat. Located at 110 rue Amelot ( just metres from where I’m sitting was also a regular haunt for Delarue – often arranging to meet new students there in order to test their nervous disposition.
